Carlisle Academy has been offering mental health and wellness opportunities in the form of ground-based (unmounted) equine-assisted learning programs for over 10 years. As a Premier Accredited Center of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH, Intl.), we use the tranquil farm environment to create a sensory-rich learning experience where all participants can benefit from the enrichment and personal growth that comes with the immediate and honest feedback of horses. All ground-based programs are facilitated by PATH, International instructors with specialty training in equine-assisted learning and supported by Carlisle Therapy Center’s therapists and professional horse handlers.
These programs are designed for veterans, vulnerable youth, and men and women recovering from addiction or other challenges. Individuals or groups participate in ground-based, trust-building exercises with horses and may sign up individually (45 minutes) or be scheduled to attend with an agency or school group (1.5 hours, Max 10 people). The unmounted work with horses may involve liberty work in the round pen, leading exercises, group challenges, and herd observation. Some participants may choose to focus on basic grooming techniques while being present and benefitting from the close contact and sensory communication with the horse.
